Understanding Your Diamonds

Whether you're a seasoned jeweler or selecting your first stone, understanding how diamonds are evaluated ensures you make confident, informed decisions.

The Four C's of Diamonds

Every diamond is unique. The globally recognized 4 C's — Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat — are the universal language used to evaluate and compare diamonds. Understanding these four factors helps you assess quality and value with confidence.

01

Cut

Cut determines how well a diamond interacts with light. It's widely considered the most important factor in a diamond's beauty. A well-cut diamond will exhibit exceptional brilliance, fire, and scintillation regardless of its other qualities. Cut grades range from Excellent to Poor.

02

Color

Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The less color a diamond has, the higher its grade and typically its value. Colorless diamonds (D-F) are the most sought after, though near-colorless stones (G-J) offer excellent value.

03

Clarity

Clarity measures the presence of internal characteristics (inclusions) and surface irregularities (blemishes). The scale ranges from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3). Many inclusions are invisible to the naked eye, making VS and SI grades popular choices for exceptional value.

04

Carat

Carat refers to a diamond's weight, not its size. One carat equals 200 milligrams. While larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable, carat weight alone doesn't determine beauty. A well-cut smaller diamond can appear larger and more brilliant than a poorly cut larger stone.

Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds

Both lab-grown and natural diamonds are real diamonds — they share the same physical, chemical, and optical properties. The difference lies in their origin. Natural diamonds form deep within the earth over billions of years, while lab-grown diamonds are created using advanced technology that replicates natural conditions in a controlled environment.

At Luminaire Diamonds, we proudly offer both options. Lab-grown diamonds deliver the same stunning beauty and durability as natural stones, and both are independently certified to the same rigorous standards. The right choice simply depends on what matters most to you.

NATURAL DIAMONDS

  • Formed deep within the earth
  • Billions of years in the making
  • Rich geological history
  • GIA and IGI certified
  • Classic choice for collectors

LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS

  • Same brilliance, fire, and hardness
  • Chemically identical to natural
  • Exceptional value for your budget
  • Sustainable and responsible
  • IGI and GCAL certified

Understanding Certifications

A diamond certificate (or grading report) is an independent assessment of a diamond's quality by a gemological laboratory. It provides an unbiased evaluation of the 4 C's and confirms the diamond's authenticity. At Luminaire, every stone comes with documentation from a recognized laboratory.

GIA

The Gemological Institute of America is the world's most respected diamond grading laboratory. GIA created the 4 C's grading system and is considered the gold standard in diamond certification.

IGI

The International Gemological Institute is one of the largest independent gemological laboratories. IGI is widely recognized for grading both natural and lab-grown diamonds with detailed reports.

GCAL

The Gem Certification and Assurance Lab provides guaranteed grading with a unique light performance analysis. GCAL certificates include actual photographs and a money-back accuracy guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds? +
Absolutely. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds. They have the same brilliance, hardness, and fire. The only difference is how they're made — in a state-of-the-art laboratory rather than deep in the earth. Every major gemological institution recognizes them as real diamonds.
Do your diamonds come with certification? +
Every diamond and gemstone we sell comes with an independent grading report from a recognized laboratory such as GIA, IGI, or GCAL. This certificate verifies the stone's quality, including its cut, color, clarity, and carat weight.
Do you sell to individual buyers or only wholesale? +
We serve everyone. Whether you're a jeweler looking for wholesale pricing and volume sourcing, or an individual searching for the perfect engagement ring or gift, we're here to help. We believe everyone deserves access to extraordinary stones at fair prices.
What is the difference between GIA and IGI certification? +
Both are highly respected independent gemological laboratories. GIA is the most widely recognized name in diamond grading and created the 4 C's system. IGI has become the leading authority for lab-grown diamond certification and is equally rigorous. Both provide detailed and reliable assessments you can trust.
How do I know which diamond is right for me? +
Start with the 4 C's — cut, color, clarity, and carat. We recommend prioritizing cut quality, as this has the greatest impact on a diamond's brilliance and sparkle. From there, balance color and clarity based on your preferences and budget. Our team is always available to provide personalized guidance.
Why choose a lab-grown diamond? +
Lab-grown diamonds offer the same beauty, durability, and certification as natural stones while being a more sustainable choice. They also provide exceptional value, allowing you to get a larger or higher-quality stone within your budget. Many of our customers — both jewelers and individual buyers — choose lab-grown for these reasons.
Do you offer custom sourcing? +
Yes. If you're looking for a specific stone — whether it's a particular shape, carat weight, color, or clarity — our team can source it for you. Contact us with your requirements and we'll find the perfect match from our global network of suppliers.
What are your shipping and return policies? +
We offer free insured shipping on all orders within the United States. Every shipment is fully insured and requires a signature upon delivery for your protection. For returns, please contact our team within 14 days of receiving your order.
How do I become a wholesale partner? +
Simply fill out our wholesale inquiry form on the homepage or contact us directly. We work with independent jewelers, retail chains, custom design studios, and online retailers. We offer competitive pricing, dedicated account management, and net terms for qualified accounts.
